Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 2026

This privacy policy explains what personal information Do It Yourself Digital collects when you use this website, why it’s collected, and what your rights are. I’ve tried to keep it short and clear. If anything is unclear, please get in touch using the details at the end of this page.

Who I am

Do It Yourself Digital (doityourselfdigital.com) is run by me, Ben Giddings, a digital communications consultant based in Madrid, Spain. For the purposes of data protection law, I am the “data controller”, which means I’m responsible for deciding how your personal information is used and for keeping it safe.

Contact: admin@doityourselfdigital.com

The short version

  • I only collect personal information when you choose to give it to me, for example by signing up to the newsletter.
  • I use it to send you what you asked for, and nothing else.
  • I never sell your information or share it with anyone for their own marketing.
  • You can unsubscribe or ask me to delete your information at any time.

What information I collect

Newsletter sign-ups

When you subscribe to the newsletter, I collect your email address and, if you provide it, your first name. I also keep a record of when and how you signed up, so I can show you gave consent.

Free downloads

From time to time, I may offer free guides, templates or other resources. To receive these, you’ll be asked for your email address and, optionally, your name. Downloading a resource may also subscribe you to the newsletter. Where it does, this will always be made clear on the sign-up form. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Contacting me

If you email me directly, I’ll have your email address and anything you include in your message. I’ll only use this to reply to you.

Website visits

Like most websites, this site collects some technical information when you visit, such as your browser type, device and the pages you view. Some of this is collected through cookies. You can find full details, and change your choices at any time, on the Cookie Policy page.

How I use your information

I use your information to:

  • send you the newsletter and any resources you’ve requested
  • reply to messages you send me
  • understand how the website is used, so I can improve it (only where you’ve agreed to analytics cookies)
  • keep the website secure and working properly

The legal basis for using your information

Under data protection law, I need a lawful reason to use your personal information. The ones I rely on are:

  • Consent: for the newsletter, free downloads and non-essential cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legitimate interests: for replying to your messages and keeping the website secure and running smoothly.

Who else handles your information

I use a small number of trusted services to run this website. They only process your information on my behalf and in line with my instructions.

  • Brevo (Sendinblue SAS, France) manages the newsletter and email sign-ups. Brevo is an EU-based company.
  • Dreamhost hosts the website.
  • Google Analytics helps me understand how visitors use the site, only if you’ve accepted analytics cookies.
  • YouTube videos are embedded on some pages. YouTube may set cookies when you play a video. These are covered in the Cookie Policy.

Where any of these providers transfer data outside the European Economic Area, they do so using recognised safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long I keep your information

  • Newsletter subscribers: until you unsubscribe. After that, I keep only your email address on a suppression list, so you aren’t accidentally added again.
  • Emails you send me: for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry, and no longer than [two years].
  • Analytics data: in line with the retention settings of the analytics tool, currently [14 months].

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of the personal information I hold about you
  • ask me to correct anything that’s wrong
  • ask me to delete your information
  • object to, or ask me to restrict, how I use your information
  • ask for your information in a format you can take elsewhere
  • withdraw your consent at any time

To exercise any of these rights, just email me at admin@doityourselfdigital.com. I’ll respond within one month.

Every newsletter also includes an unsubscribe link at the bottom.

If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your information, you have the right to complain to the Spanish data protection authority, the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (www.aepd.es). If you live in the UK, you can also contact the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk). I’d appreciate the chance to put things right first, though, so please get in touch.

Keeping your information safe

I take reasonable steps to protect your personal information, including using secure, reputable service providers and keeping the website and its software up to date.

Children

This website is aimed at business owners and isn’t intended for anyone under 16. I don’t knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to this policy

I may update this policy from time to time, for example when I add new features to the site. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
